The Kingmakers: Venture Capital and the Money Behind the Net
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (16 July, 2001)
Author: Karen Southwick
Average review score:

Insider's View of Venture Capital
I have been a limited partner in venture firms for over twenty years. Karen Southwick's "fly on the ceiling" view of actual general partners meetings was an eye opener. She pulls no punches such as a general partner's comments on one firm, "I've basically given up on the company. They did everything I told them not to. There's no CEO. They're going to run out of money and I don't want to write another check"... "I've totally lost confidence in the team". This honest reporting of behind the scenes action makes the book a must read for anyone interested in venture capital and Silicon Valley.

Knowledge Assets Professional's Guide to Valuation and Financial Management
Published in Paperback by Harcourt Brace Professional Pub (15 April, 2000)
Authors: Mark K. Clare and Arthur W. Detore
Average review score:

Finally, a Very Practical Guide
"Knowledge Management", "Intellectual Capital", "Organizational Learning" and similar concepts all aim to help managers create more competitive success and shareholder value through better use of their firm's intangible assets (e.g., individual and collective knowledge, be it explicit or tacit). In spite of the intuitive appeal of these ideas, in too many organizations managers have a hard time applying them practically and measuring their results. This book directly addresses these issues in a manner that is both accessible and practical. To be sure, many more articles and books will be written on this subject; this one, however, should stand the test of time because of its usefulness to managers who actually have to implement these ideas and live with their results.

Knowledge Nirvana
Published in Hardcover by Xulon Press (July, 2002)
Author: Juris Kelley
Average review score:

The best knowledge management book I've read
I've read other knowledge management books and they were hard to understand. Knowledge Nirvana, however, is easy to understand. Mr. Kelley uses terrific examples and the book is so well organized, even with a fantastic glossary, which I use often. Thanks so much for writing a knowledge management book that talks about real-life experiences and not just a bunch of theory! I highly recommend! A++!

LA VOLATILIDAD DE LOS FLUJOS DE CAPITAL: COMO CONTROLAR SU IMPACTO EN AMERICA LATINA
Published in Textbook Binding by IDB Bookstore (May, 1996)

Average review score:

Legal Capital (Concepts and Insights Series)
Published in Paperback by Foundation Press (15 December, 2003)
Authors: Manning and Hanks
Average review score:

Highly recommended for corporate lawyers and law students
LEGAL CAPITAL only does one thing--dividends and related legal capital rules--but does it better than anybody. Lots of problems and examples make an often obscure and puzzling area of the law readily understandable. Very highly recommended.

Lightspeed Business: Find It, Fund It, Build It, When There's No Margin for Error
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (15 October, 2001)
Authors: J. Neil Weintraut and Christopher Barr
Average review score:

Excellent primer for entrepreneurs
Barr and Weintraut's work gives concrete advice to tomorrow's leaders on how to position and structure their businesses in order to attract venture capital and ultimately, win. The emphasis is on internet startup financing but I think young CEOs targeting other industries may benefit too. The subjects covered vary from really simple observations based on common sense such as the importance of focusing on the customer and why it is important to hire the best folks you can get, to more complicated issues such as how much equity to give to whom and what to expect will happen to the capitalization structure over time.

The book is peppered throughout with specific Internet company war stories from the last decade that well illustrate their insights and keep the prose entertaining and punchy. I would definitely recommend this book for folks interested in founding or working at a startup, especially first-time entrepreneurs that haven't had much experience with venture capitalists.

Limits to Capital
Published in Paperback by Verso Books (December, 1999)
Author: David Harvey
Average review score:

A great book to get started on understanding Marx's Captial
I was attracted to this work becaues i'm interested in Marx and have read another of Harvey's books "The Condition of Postmodernity." Harvey is an erudite scholar who's formal education is in georgraphy, but his research has produced accessable and powerful studies beyond his origins. "Limits to Captial" is a complete and balanced account of Marx's economic work centering upon his major text "Das Kaptial." Harvey has does a intense study of Marx and Marxist scholarship (Lenin, Rose Luxingberg, and others) to produce a systematic and dialetical account of Marx's critique of Captialism. Even though harevy pays attention to the importance of Hegelian dialetics this book is accessable to to readers who do not have strong philosophic of economic backgrounds. If your are interested in Marx and/or captialism this is an excelent inroad to begin your studies. A detaled biblography of cited sources is a gem for continuted research. His book on postmodernity is also excelent.

Living Next Door to the Death House
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (March, 2003)
Authors: David Clinton Owens and Virginia Stem Owens
Average review score:

Even-handed and helpful
I have just finished Living Next Door to the Death House and really appreciated the good writing. The book was excellent! It has been very helpful to me in my work as a Methodist pastor; during Advent I did a series of lectures on "tough issues" and thought that Homosexuality or separation of Church and State/Prayer in our schools would be the most passionate subjects, but I was amazed in that the Death Penalty was, by far, the most passionate and difficult for many. I have learned that I can talk about why I am against the Death Penalty, but I have not had a loved one murdered...... the stories I have heard from my members have humbled me and I continue to learn that this whole subject is very complex. This book takes so many of the sides and I found it to be very helpful. I will suggest it to my people here that are struggling. Again, I commend the Owenses for their excellent book.
